I have an old fish aqarium full of crickets and was wondering if there was a way to make it not stink so bad? Right now there is the cardboard egg cartons and some plastic leaves in there with them. The crickets are being fed to my bearded dragon

  1. well try to  clean the cage as much as you can. And the tubes they hide in also. they just 'smell'.

  2. There really isnt a way to make them not stink......you can keep them on cat litter that helps or vermiculite...thats a little harder to keep clean....for sure keep the tubes and stuff clean cuz thats usually where they p**p!...basically they just stink and they have been stinkin for millions of years!

  3. dont spray anything on them that would heard our lizard to ingest, first of all.

second i would switch the crickets between two containers maybe every other day and clean out the container that you arent using. you might consider keeping them outside so the smell wont bother you too much.

  4. Yeah its hard not to make them not stink. keep paper towles on the bottom of the cage and just remove the paper towels so you can catch all the p**p. Them remove paper towel tubes as often as you can. Also keep the cage very dry, just use the gel water because normal water will cause it to stink a lot more.

  5. It's not easy. I've found that the smell is usually mostly dead crickets. Though I'm not saying the wast doesn't smell. Make sure you're stocked up on cardboard, egg carton is good but cut up paper towel tubes work great as well. Change the cardboard every two or three days, they tend to p**p in it like crazy.

A different bedding may help as well. Paper towel is easy to clean out, but it doesn't offer much help. Things like corn cob, cat litter, or beddings made for small animals control the odor well. This should be changed at least weekly, and always try to pull any deads out when you see them.

The next thing to do is check your food. If you're feeding gelatinous gut load, that stinks. It needs to always be in a clean bowl, and once it begins to dry and harden it gets smelly. Then it starts attracting fruit flies. Apples and potatoes are often fed to crickets, and they must be switched daily. Leave them in longer and they rot and smell.

The last thing I would say is to check the number of crickets you've got. In a 10 gallon the most you would want to have is about 1000-1500. Any more than that is going to be very cramped, that means lots of dead crickets and lots of p**p. Of course if the tank is smaller you'll want even less crickets.  The quantity definitely determines the stench.

If you just make sure everything is fresh and clean you should be fine. And remember not to use any harsh chemicals when washing the tank. If the crickets get it, your beardie gets it. Hope I could help!
