I have a 5-6 month old german Shepherd. A friend of mine has a 3 year old Jack Russel. She recently brought her dog over and Koty (German Sheperd) seemed fine but Nippy (Jack Russel) seemed to have the problem. I dont want them to be close to each other again until I have found a good way for them to get along. Nippy got out of the car and start freaking out and growling yet Koty just sat there and didn't make really any noises or movement towards him. It was also Nippy's first time over. Any help?

  1. Your Jack Russel will do better meeting another dog if the meeting takes place away from home. You and your friend should meet at a "neutral" location and take the dogs for a nice walk together and let the dogs get to know each other.

Also, Nippy needs to be restrained on a leash when he is with other dogs - even if it's at your house; it's for his own safety.

  2. Jack Russels are like that.  They are more territorial and always want to be boss.  That is just the way the breed is.  Plus they are both males, so there is some typical dominance positioning going on.  Just make sure you supervise them when they are together.  The JRT would be more likely to start a fight, but the GSD would win it.  Try not to let them get into an argument.  The JRT needs to be corrected whenever he tries to pick on the other dog.  He can't help being a bossy dog.  It is just his breed showing itself.  JRT are normally saucy, bossy little dogs.
