My dad just told me that he bought a blender. Ofcourse, I have an un-dying love for smoothies and I just became a vegan 2 months ago. I was woundering if anyone had any tips, recipes, or links to some vegan smoothie recipes!

  1. Decadent Vegan Smoothies

Yes, smoothie recipes abound, but here are a couple that get the residents of Vegan Street up and going in the wee hours of the morn. You can use whatever fruit you like, but lately we've been on a blueberry kick. Not only are these tasty, but they're oh-so pretty to look at. As usual, we recommend using organic ingredients whever possible.

    Blueberry Smoothie

    (for two thirsty vegans)

    1/2 bag of frozen blueberries

    2 tbsp. blueberry preserves

    7 or 8 ice cubes

    1 1/2 cups of soymilk*

    1 banana

This is super easy. Just toss everything into a blender, switch to the highest setting, and let fly until you stop hearing ice cubes crunching and everything is fairly smooth.

There are an infinite number of variations on this using different combinations of fruit and jam. You might also consider adding protein powder, ground flax seed, or any other supplement that strikes your fancy. It's best to wait until near the end, and just blend long enough to mix the protein powder of whatever in. You can also substitute apple juice for the soymilk to create a tangier concotion.

    Here's another favorite variation:

    Chocolate Smoothie

    (again, for two thirsty vegans)

    7 or 8 ice cubes

    1 1/2 cups of soymilk*

    1/4 cup ground sweet chocolate**

    1 banana

Again, there's lots's you can do with this. Try adding a little vanilla extract or 1/2 cup of cold coffee or espresso. You could also try mint, peanut butter, or raspberry preserves. Your imagination is your only limit.

*we usually use vanilla flavored Silk, though it would be delicious with your favorite brand of soy, rice, oat, or nut milk.

**our favorite vegan chocolate is Ghirardelli sweet ground chocolare, but there are several other good ones.

  2. Smoothies need something smooth and thick as the base. I use either bananas or silky (extra soft) tofu, then add some juice and my fruit. The juice makes it sweet, so you don't need anything else other than maybe a couple ice cubes, then blend away! (I usually try to avoid using ice cubes by add some frozen fruit, like mango chunks, blueberries or straberries.)

  3. Fruits and soy milk. You can also find vegan ice cream in some natural stores. We have a locally owned store that sells it here. Make it the same as if you weren't a vegan, but substitute soy milk and non-dairy ice cream.

  5. what in the world could be meat related in a smoothie????  use soy milk...fruits are not meat.....I think vegans think too hard sometimes.....if you want a burger eat one, if you want veggies eat them.....if you want a smoothie...have a smoothie....

And of course, my favorite is just plain strawberry banana with ice!

And Rob Lou...vegan means no milk, yogurt, etc. Don't get so upset before you know what something means.
