run Hijackthis and remove alot of unwanted programs from running and leeching on to your explorer. Type msconfig in the bottom search in start menu and uncheck all unwanted programs in services(check the hide windows application option).  Also go to the startup tab of that window and uncheck just about anything that you don't use almost everytime your on the computer.

Vista is much slower to get into windows than XP but, once in windows, it should perform well. IVista is almost crash proof which is a good point compared to Win Xp. Run a spybot software to clean the registry. Spy Doctor is very good for that.

Well, overall-- more RAM.

It seems that a lot of computers that came with Vista pre-installed had insufficient RAM. I'd say install 4GB of RAM and your Vista will move a lot quicker.
