Question:

How to market my graphics?

I'm a graphic designer and am now ready to promote my talents so I can make it in the commercial world of the arts. One of my specialties is designing resumes and cover-letters. My question is how and where I can market myself so that I can not only get my name out there, but to make money on the side as well.

I figure I can charge someone about $35-50 for a combined resume and cover-letter which includes a PDF file in which they can upload it on any job-site, and a printed master copy as well as the word document itself in which the customer can take to the printer.

I just don't know where to get my customers. Any ideas?

  1. I could call myself a graphic designer, but I'm only 14! Well, try popular art websites such as DeviantArt, everybody has a chance there. Advertise locally, or on a website if you can.

  2. talk to the career services department at the local high schools/colleges.  mostly high school, though, since career services in colleges/univs might help with that already.  high schools are harder to find a staff that'll sit down with students to do that.  ask them if you can leave fliers and make a deal on some sort of commission for them or something.  approaching the senior class president or senior class english teacher may do some good.  i hope that'll give you an idea of what you can do locally instead of internet wise..

  3. viral marketing.  use popular free sites to build business... like myspace.  Or contact universities... I'm sure they all have free career fairs and job search engines for recent grads.  They can bring your product directly to your target audience.

As for brochures for small biz... start in your own backyard, pick up cards at local biz and email them with a personalized sample of your work. or just drop by and see them... but as a biz owner that gets annoying when I'm trying to make money.

Also, your type of field requires networking to become successful... join a young business professional club or other free business association you can find them through the chamber of commerce.  That will give you a great opportunity to voice your abilities to people who can take them to larger corporations or use your services themselves.
