How to merge different pictures?

Can anyone tell me how to merge different pictures and make them look that they have been taken together? Is it also possible to have a different picture as a background for the merged pictures?

I would recommend getting GIMP to do that. It will be able to do what you say. I have it on my computer and you would not know when it is running because it's so quick and light on resources. It only uses up about 100MB of your hard drive too. GIMP has been compared to Photoshop and it is completely free. Here are the downloads for the Windows and Mac operating systems -
