Question:

How to minimise chlorine damage?

Hi there. I recently started going swimming for an hour three to four times a week. While I love the excersise, I have noticed that my skin and hair are much much dryer now, making my hair frizzy and my skin itchy. I assume this is the chlorine. I already shower right before I get in the pool, and right after. I use John Freida Brilliant Brunette Shampoo and conditioner, and moisturise thoroughly after my shower, but neither of these seem to be helping.

I remember a anti chlorine shampoo from when I was a kid...do things like that still exsist any more? Or, can any other regular swimmers tell me thier tricks for avoiding this sort of problem?

  1. for ur skin, put on heavy duty lotion before and after u get in the pool!

  2. Chlorine, although it does keep our pools clean, is quite damaging in direct contact. If this is your own pool, you might want to consider switching to salt cleaned water. But if it if a public pool, there is little you can do in that perspective.

However, I also love swimming, and the great exercise it gives. When I first started, I had that same problem. Here's a little known tip: your hair can only hold so much water, so make sure your hair is fully drenched before you  dive in. Also, while you're at it, apply some Anti-Chlorine Leave in Conditioner. Yes, it exists; i use it myself :). I use Red Ken Shimmering Defense. It says on the red/orange tube UV Rescue also, but trust me, it works for water :). Your hair will be back to its radiance before you know it. Oh-as for your skin, I use Bath and Body works lotion.

Good luck! Hope this helps! :)

  3. Most regular shampoos don't get all the chlorine out so you should use a dedicated anti-chlorine shampoo. Boots do a good own label one, though I have to say I'm not keen on the smell. I buy it for my children rather than myself. They also do a hair mask but I would imagine that this would come out in the water, which the pool wouldn't be too keen on. Ask your hairdresser for a recommendation as many salon brands have a swim shampoo. As for the skin, my children's swimming teacher says that she has to use vaseline on hers as it gets so dry. Sorry to not be able to help on that.

  4. I swim too 4 times a week for an hour and a half and my hair gets really dry and frizzy. I started wearing a swim cap. It is a little uncomfortable but it really works.  For your skin as soon as you get out of the shower put lotion on and before you go to bed put lotion on and as soon as you wake up put lotion on. If that doesn't help I would see a dermatologist.
