Question:

How to moderate drinking?

I drink very responsibly most of the time, and never get silly drunk (I avoid hard alcohol and wine and so on, just have a couple of beers) but for some reason at parties I often binge in the excitement of it all and end up repentant, feeling like a bad person and so on. I would really like some advice on how to not get stupid at a party - I think alot of the problem is social anxiety - how can I remain calm and drink as I normally would with familiar people?

  1. Try drinking water between each beer.  That'll not only keep you hydrated, it'll take alot longer for you to get drunk, meaning it's less likely to happen.

  2. Dilute the beer with water.  It will take longer to get drunk on diluted beer.

  3. Why do people get hangovers? It's the same reasons as you. Everyone knows you feel rough after drinking a lot, but you hear countless complaints of it. For those with social anxiety, it just feels so good to have the fear lifted we want to continue drinking.

Either seek help for social anxiety through CBT, drink less when you are not anxious and use a damage control approach, or stop drinking permanently.

I did the latter for a month until tonight. I found things so boring that I started again, lol.

  4. save beer, drink water !! (yes I know the shirt at tourist spots says the opposite)
