How to mosaic?

I have been asked to run a simple mosaic workshop for some of our youth through the church as i am quite the arty person. However, i have never tried mosaic and i have no idea where to start. They are wanting to auction off the items after they are finished to raise money so they have to look half decent... :)

does anyone have some easy steps and methods for basic mosaic, and some simple- easy projects that i can do and teach to others?

I was thinking a mirror frame... or a table top with a simple design drawn on top- but again- i dont know what i need or how to do it! :) heeelp! :) thanks!!

Try this link and have a look and read...i did a Mosaic workshop a month or so ago and made a Mirror.....I think the easiest way and remember i am a beginer myself, is to do an abstract design not for example mosaic a chook etc....Also to break the tile we put a towel on the ground put the tile face down i tHINK...(look that one up o cant rember 100%) close the towel over the top and hit with a hammer so the pieces are the size you prefer......I had a great time doing this and i am sure you will too just have aread and a surf around....GOOD LUCK

  2. get some old dishes in different colours from a garage sale or a charity store , break them into pieces draw the outlines of something or someone and you fill the gaps with the pieces  by using grout and there is your mosaic

  3. I used to have a  handicraft counter and did all the display items. You will need all sorts of objects to stick the tiles to, bottles, solid cutting boards, square coaster size bits of timber, tabletops, mirrors frames and photos frames; the list is endless. You can buy tiles, the littler the better or go to a tile shop; grab the out the back cheapies, take them home, smash them and use them. A good medium drying time glue and grouting which can be bought dry and mixed as needed. By using small tiles you will fit them into a crazy or pattern much easier. Have plenty of rags to wipe off the excess grouting. Step one; chose your project; step two lay tiles out on table how you think you'd like them or just pick up and stickon haphazardly; step three; starting at bottom of bottle or board put some glue allowing it to get tacky (don't have runny glue) then place tiles in place. by doing a small section at a time you will see any adjustments that need doing; step four, after glue is dry mix grouting and spread over work; allow to semi dry them wipe excass off with a damp rag, again a section at a time. Don't let it dry too much before wiping off. Good luck.
