I'm going to go draw blood now for a surgery over the summer, and I know it doesnt' really hurt. I'm just worried that when I get there I'll feel really nervous...and I don't want that to happen bc/ I kno it's nothing. How can I stop being scared?

  1. in all seriousness. think of a s*x fantasy

  2. When I donate blood, I just look away and take slow deep breaths.

Being scared never really goes away... when I know I'm going to get stuck by a needle my pulse is always around 100, even though I know it's no big deal.

    Xanax helps too :-)

  3. Suck it up ... it'll be over in no time and you already know you'll be fine.

  4. I think about a happy place and try no to think about it

  5. watch DR 90210 or Discovery Health or something and the needle will seem like nothing to you

  6. first of you have to understand why you blood has to be drawn from you. Second, dont be afraid to talk about it with the nurse or with your significant others. third, have any idea how it hurts., but ask just to be informed only, dont rely on what they say completely because different people have different perceptions about pain. (well in my case it was juts like an ant biting me for a while). It usually hurts when the needle is being stuck in your skin, but while the blood is being drawn out, it doesnt hurt that much anymore...

  7. Keep in mind it isn't YOUR arm the needle's going in!

  8. expect to feel something like a pinch, look away and keep chatting to the person doing it, that should help. You might get a cup of tea or coffee afterward, but you'll be OK.

    Good luck with your surgery.

  9. There is nothing to be scared of. I have had my blood drawn hundreds of times and it is not bad at all. Depending on your phlebotomist and how good your veins are you may feel nothing or you may feel a small bit of pain. It is nothing to be scared of though, as if it does hurt it only lasts for a second when the needle is actually going into the skin. Once the needle is in the vein and the blood is flowing it is painless.

There is nothing to be scared of, however, people often naturally hold their breath while their blood is being taken. Don't do that! If you hold your breath you may become lightheaded and pass out.

Just stay calm and breathe. There is nothing to be scared of.
