Hey, I am a fairly new driver and I am noticing that when I drive Gas seems to be going really quickly, and then not when others drive the same distance. Is there something i can do when pressing the gass pedal?

  1. keep a constant speed, try to avoid stopping and accelerating often.

  2. Slowly press down on the gas pedal when you want to go, don't slam it to the ground.

One of the big reasons people waste so much gas is because they press the gas pedal and accelerate really quickly once the light turns green, and then after a few seconds they hit a red light and have to slam on the breaks.

They go 50 mi/hr for 3 seconds and have to stop, while you can do the speed limit and take 6 or 7 seconds and have to stop anyways.

Everyone is in such a hurry these days.

  3. Drive slower. It's true, if you drive twice as fast, you are not burning twice as much gas, you are burning more like 3 or 4 times as much.

  4. Smooth steady acceleration. Don't hit the gas as soon as the light turns green.

Give yourself more braking room when coming to a complete stop. Start slowing down well before you reach a red light or stop sign.

This is one that even I can't follow, but try to go 55mph on the highway instead of going faster. The faster you go the more fuel your car will use.

When you know your going to be idle for a minute or more turn your car off (assuming there are no problems starting it). For example, if you take someone to the store or picking someone up and are waiting outside.

But the your gas consumption could depend on the type of car you drive. If you drive a luxury car and others drive an econo-box then you'll naturally use up more gas.

  5. Some tips for help with mileage:

keep your tire pressure as high as your owners manual allows.

    drive carefully. accelerate slowly.

when you see a stop (red light, etc) ahead of you, immediately take your foot off the gas and coast to the stop.

    no roof rack

    keep the car maintained properly.

If your owners manual says premium fuel required, use it.

on the open highway, drive as slowly as your patience allows. I found that shifting from 75 to 65 increased my mileage by 20%.

Use cruise control. Steady speed helps mileage.

Do not idle. let the car warm only for 30 seconds before driving off. If you are going to be stopped at a long light, shut the engine off.

And the biggest one: don't drive.
