How to obtain and grow pineapples from seed?

I live in spain and would like to grow pineapples could anyone tell me where I could source seeds from and wether anyone has had any success with this crop?

  1. Pineapples are usually propagated by new vegetative growth because it is difficult to germinate the seeds.


  2. Buy a pineapple, cut off the top, stick it in some water until you get roots, transfer to soil.

You probably will not be able to find seeds because the longevity of pineapple seeds is only about six months, they are very difficult to germinate and usually will not grow true.  Seeds are used mostly for breeding programs and commercial propagation of the plant is by cuttings.  And yes, it is fairly simple to grow a pineapple but be aware it can take as long as sixteen months from planting to ripe fruit, depending on the variety.
