  1. How about calling several successful group homes for young mothers in your area and asking if you could volunteer.  While you're there, you could find out the ins & outs of the industry.  Plus, it'll help you decide if it's really something you'd like to do full-time.  Or you could call around and interview some of the administrators of the homes and interview them about how they were established.  Good Luck to you.

  2. Well, start by writing out a plan of how it will be run.  Then figure in funding.  Now look into applying for grants.  Your best bet is through the library, it's hard to separate the legitimate services from the scams on the Internet.

I think you have a wonderful idea and I hope you're successful.  Good luck!

Perhaps you and Marge could work on this idea together.  (Just a thought)

  3. Let me know.  I'd love to open one too.

    Hey!  I'm on LI too!

  4. wow.. i think that would be a great idea ...heres a few things i think you could do to get some help ..

you could go to your local ministry, or ministry for children or a group home ...you could ask them if they have any ideas how you could get started onto your way ...because you have no home you could go to the bank and ask for a loan or for help in finding a large building umm .. well thats all i can say for now

good luck and its a realy great thing you are doing :)

  5. I agree with the other poster -- you have to actually work in a group home and learn how such are run before you try to do this yourself. Wanting to do it and having the expertise to do it are two very, very different things.

To have such a home, you need to have:

-- a board of directors who will be fiscally responsible for the organization

-- a business plan for at least the first three years that shows how many people you will hire, what their area of expertise will be in order to run this group home properly (what degree should they have? How much work experience should they have?), and how the services of this group home will be administered.

-- a budget for the first year showing what you expect expenses to be

-- a facility for this group home that will pass all government inspections

Will this be a nonprofit organization? A for-profit business? Do you expect to generate income through government grants or individual donations?

A lot to think about. Your local volunteer center can put you in touch with organizations working with young mothers in your area so you can get started volunteering.
