How to open files on a Flash drive

I attach my flash drive to my USport on my Vista system and I see the J drive right away but I cannot seem to figure out how to open my files that are on this flashdrive. I see an .exe setup file and none of the 3 choices I get let me see any files when I open each choice. The files on the flash drive were copied from a Windows 98 system. Do I need to download anything to my Vista system to see the files on the flash drive? How do I open the files on the flashdrive?
