Question:

How to opt out of college classes?

My husband has a good job working in the computer field, where he uses programming skills. He didn't finish college and is now going back while working, and a lot of his previous credits didn't transfer over. He knows so much of the material in his classes, it's almost a sin for him to be sitting through what he already knows how to do. He pretty much shows up and aces the material, so it feels like a waste of valuable time to both of us. I haven't gone through this so I don't know if it's even done at all....but if you meet with a dean or someone, will they ever allow you to test or opt out of classes, or count work experience toward credits?

  1. Yes, it's possible to get credit through either departmental or standardized tests, work experience, or special permission, but it's on a case-by-case basis, and it definitely depends on the school and the administration, so you'll have to ask them about it.

  2. Yes.

It is doable.  Talk with the dean or department chairperson.   Both testing out of courses and recieving credit for work experience has been/ is being done at colleges.

  3. I've heard that you can easily take a test on all of the courses material to earn the credit, but I can't recall what it is exactly called and I'm not sure if it is offered everywhere...  I'm only a high school student.  I'd recommend talking to the dean or professor about this, and hopefully someone more knowledged will also answer.  G'luck. ^_^

  4. Yes. You can often test out of classes, and be allowed to take upper division classes in their place. He should speak to his academic advisor about this. It's especially good to try this for the lower level classes. He won't get academic credit for what he knows, but he will be able to waive out of the class itself, and take something else in its place.

It's often a good idea for someone trying to test out to get their hands on the syllabus from the class, and also on the textbook, so they can glance through it and make sure they really know the info. Any info they've forgotten, they can review really quickly before the exam.
