Question:

How to order coffee?

When ordering at Starbucks or other coffee house, I'm confused about what to do regarding cream & sugar. I don't like my coffee black, and I don't know if they fix your coffee for you when you ask or if stuff is available for you to do it yourself. So, when you're ordering...

Do you need to tell them "with nonfat milk," etc. and they'll mix it in with the coffee? Or do you ask for cream and sugar?

Also, what is the taste difference between coffee with milk and coffee with creamer?

Thanks,

A new coffee drinker

  1. If you're ordering regular coffee at Starbucks (they call it 'american'), ask them to leave room for milk, and then you can add your own at the little station they have with napkins, etc.  So . . . say you want a medium,  ask for: Grande American coffee, with room for milk.

Taste difference . . . Starbucks coffee is really strong,  starbucks with nonfat milk will still taste really strong.  Also, if you have to put a lot of milk in your coffee to get it light enough, it will also cool it off, maybe too much.

Maybe you could try a latte at Starbucks?  That's coffee (espresso, pressed coffee, vs. american drip coffee, ie they make it in an espresso maker vs. drip coffee machine).  A latte is made with steamed milk, which solves the cold milk issue.   Try these:  Fairly sweet: Cinnamon Dolce Latte (order a 'skinny' Cin Dolce Latte if you want nonfat & splenda, or skinny w/sugar instead of splenda).

Or try Vanilla Latte- that's really good.

Bottomline:  usually for the lattes and other mixed espresso drinks, the barista mixes in the milk/cream & sugar,  But for the regular coffees, you mix in your own.

  2. If you would like for them to add the cream and sugar then just let them know- just tell them the milk/cream you desire and however many sugars (ie add nonfat with three sugars.) If you prefer to do it yourself, just request that they leave room from cream and sugar. They typically have a rather large bar with goodies if you prefer to prepare the coffee yourself.

Creamer is thicker so it dulls some of the "bitterness of coffee" and gives it a thicker and "creamier" taste and appearance. Milk dulls it down some, but allows the coffee to remain the same consistancy and only slightly alters the flavor of the coffee in regards to it's "coffee taste."

You always stick with regular coffee? I LOVE me a cinnamon dulce latte, Starbucks style. Yum.

  3. Welcome to the delicious world of coffee drinkers !

At places like Starbucks, they usually have cream, milk, and sugar on a table for people to put it in themselves because a lot of people are really picky about how they take their coffee/tea. The barista/server will usually ask "Do you want room for cream and sugar?" in which case you would say yes, unless you take your coffee black. That way they don't fill up the cup completely. Or, you could just say "Please leave room for cream" when you order your coffee. It's rare that they put it in for you, in fact I don't know of anywhere where they do that...

Creamer is better for you than cream, I believe, but doesn't taste as good. Personally, I think your best bet is using 1% or 2% milk. It still has a bit of the creamy taste, but not the same amount of fat as cream or half and half. If you like skim milk, that is the healthiest thing to put in. Lowfat milks are better than creamers because they don't have strange chemicals and they also have protein and calcium (although only a little bit).

Also, if you are considering ordering lattes, the default is usually 2% milk. Specify if you want it made with skim or whole milk.

  4. Tell them exactly how you want it.

With sugar, without, cream, milk etc etc.

They'll help you with that and yes there are things on the side bar if you want to do it yourself.

Cream makes the coffee richer and lighter.

Skim milk will keep it darker and stronger.

  5. if you go through the drive through then you tell them "with non-fat and 3 sugars" or however you like it. if you go inside then tell them room for cream and you do it yourself at the caffe.

and you dont ask for an "american" coffee or whatever that guy said. we have amercanos, but those are a different drink , although similar in taste to a normal coffee.

and skinny lattes are non-fat with sugar free syrup not splenda.

just trying to clear things up :)
