  1. Do you mean the write protection? You are reading the tape, you don't care if it is write protected.

Do you mean the macrovision copy protection? The other poster is correct.

  2. If you are speaking of macrovision and the such, copy protection software placed on early VHS tapes to lighten and darken the picture on cloned copies then you maybe hating life..

Few sites still exist on the net with possible virus free software that could allow you to obtain this from a vcr to a data converter and into your pc.. I cannot state how due to yahoo violations, but will give you the direction needed to investigate option of your own...

  3. cover the little square hole on the end of the tape that faces you when its in the vcr.  you can use electrical tape, duct tape, masking tape.

  4. Hi Samsam,

You can legally backup your VHS tapes for your own use.

As you know you have to bypass the copy protection to copy pre recorded VHS tapes. A good device that will do that is the Digital Video Stabilizer. It works like a charm and is only $25. Go here to read about and see an example (it is the one on the right) - http://www.qualitekindustries.com/vidsta...

I backed up dozens of my VHS tapes without a glitch.
