I have my heart set on the FN P90, my question is, it there any other way to own it besides opening a gun dealership and becoming a police officer? Thanks!

  1. I get my information from www.atf.gov.

A Class 2 Special Occupational Taxpayer (SOT) can make, tax free, machine guns, silencers, short rifles, short shotguns or AOWs. A Class 2 can also have weapons transferred to him tax free, by other SOT's. He also has to have a type 07 or type 10 FFL. He does not need to ask prior permission of ATF to make a weapon, he would notify ATF of its making within 24 hours after its making by filing Form 2 with ATF.

A Class 2 SOT can make machine guns for research and development purposes, or for sale to dealers as samples, or for sale to government entities. These are commonly called post-86 machine guns.

A type 07 or type 10 FFL may deal in imported or American-made post-86 machine guns only to other type 07 or type 10 FFLs or government agencies.  To do so, the licensee must have a letter from a government agency on that agency's letterhead and signed by a duly appropriate person from the same agency, requesting demonstration or presentation of suitable machineguns for the purpose of selling to the agency.  Being a member of that agency does not entitle you to own the machine gun, as it is government property,

So, the answer is yes, you can! (Do I sould like Obama?)  But, you have to jump through hoops by being in the business, paying special taxes, becoming a licencee, and dealing with government agencies.  If you ever give up your license, you must dispose of the machine guns in a manner proscribed by the BATF.

Please check the BATF website for more details. http://www.atf.gov/

  2. Yes! What you need to do is contact the BATF and ask for a class 3 weapons permit. You will have to look at their website for more information: http://www.atf.treas.gov/

  3. Police officers don't automatically get to own machine guns.  Usually the department owns them.  So your question is how to own a post 1986 machine gun?

Good luck with that, but here's how to start.  Find someone who deals in Class III firearms.  Locate an owner willing to part with his legal, pre-1986 machine gun.  Pay the asking prices (can be as high as 10 or even 20-thousand US dollars).  Pay the transfer tax, another $200.  Wait around for the background check.  Convince the local Sheriff or Chief of Police to write for you a letter saying that you are 'okay' to own a full-auto weapon.  This is why I say to those who want to own full-auto guns in the USA:  Prepare to jump through hoops and drop a lot of cash!

Other posters here make it sound sooo easy, so why don't you listen to them instead.

    Good luck.

  4. Becoming a cop will in no way help you own a post 1986 NFA firearm.

  5. They make a semi auto version with an extended barrel called the PS90. I don't know if they make a semi auto version with a regular barrel that would be considered a Short barreled rifle. You could probably take it to a gunsmith to be re-barreled just fill out a form 1 and pay the $200 tax stamp for a short barrel rifle.  Title 18 U.S.C.  ÃƒÂ‚§ 922(r) doesn't apply to SBRs so you wouldn't have to worry about putting American parts in it.

If you're absolutely set on the machine gun then i don't know.

Interestedly waiting to see how many people that have no idea about NFA items or how to obtain them say "get a class 3 license".

  6. Why would you want one?  High rate of fire weapons do no good at all if you can't hit what you want with the second shot. The HRF just make more money for the munitions makers.  If you just want to shoot one, join the service. The National Guard is recruiting.  They will teach you about weapons and you will do a service to the State.

  7. I think JM is on the right track. As a civillian you probably won't be able to get a P90 with selective fire unless you open a security company like Blackwater or something and get some government contracts.

Get a PS90 and have it converted to an SBR (short barreled rifle) for 200$ with the tax stamp.

Believe me with the price and availability of 5.7mm ammo you'll be thanking your self later that you didn't manage to  get a selective fire gun that eats 200$ worth of ammo that fast.

    Good luck
