Question:

How to paint countertops.?

I have done a lot of searching on ways to paint a kitchen countertop.

It seems the key is the final finish. I have seen where a product called Envirotex Lite is used and also just a basic clear coat. I have also found a DVD which can be purchased - "Countertop Transfauxmations". Has anyone tried any of these methods and do they work. Not sure what method the DVD uses.

  1. Jim, generally the reason is price. Believe it or not, there are homeowners who don't have the $500 or more it would cost for even the cheapest countertop, but who do have $50 for paint to cover up the old scratched counter.

  2. I'm not sure why anyone would want to paint a countertop, since the countertop surface must be totally impervious to liquids and also be impervious to absorbing anything like spilled foodstuffs etc. Any "paint" used for a project like this would have to be 2-part epoxy paint. Why would you want to paint as opposed to installing Formica or the other commercially available countertop materials??

  3. I have experience with the Envirotex Lite, and It is mainly meant to be used for like a coffee table, or side table, (it doesn't like the humidity levels that a person has in their kitchen) counter tops would get too much use, and you would have to re-apply WAY too often. I have never heard of the countertop Transfauzmations. (Sounds like it could work, if properly done) I would try to find the products that they require, talk to either a professional painter, or a paint specialist at a paint store, (Like Sherwin Williams, or Rhodda, or Benjamin Moore, somewhere where that is all they sell is paint and painting supplies) not like home depot or lowes or any big box place, usually their employees do not have the training to answer a question like this. Get opinions from different painters too. Sounds like a cool idea, but I (personally) would be a little leary of "Painting" over countertops. (not sure about yours, but my countertops get ALOT of use, and abuse, and standing water from rinsing dishes and setting on counter untill the get washed,

Good luck and I would be curious to find out the outcome if you do try the Countertop Transfauzmation!!!
