  1. Here's the deal. People can't make it on this pittance.  This is the modern version of indentured labor. We as taxpayers are paying the difference that it takes the people to survive, and are really supporting the stingy corporations while they Pay slave labor salaries.  It should be as the European nations do it- all businesses have to pay a living wage to their employees, or they are not allowed to go in business- This makes the need to have such a massive welfare system that we have in the states unnecessary.. People can afford their own houses, not have to live in government subsidized housing projects under this system.

Think about this- until recently not only did the minimum wage not get adjusted for inflation, it was not raised for 10 years because of the republican dominated congress- We should be ashamed as nation to do this do the workers of this country. This is a direct result of the rich and the corporations running this country- the workers of this nation should have the power and not the elite rich that get richer off the poor mans sweat.

  2. Most will work two jobs unless they receive benefits.

But not all earn that little. My husbands job and most people in his profession get $19-25 an hour (Refer. Technicion)

And the wage goes up from there.

But even wal-mart pay something like $10-15 bucks an hour - i have family members working as cafateria dinner ladys and store clerks and they earn $11 an hour.

$7.50 these days i'd have to agree with the person above me, it's typically high school kids earning that.

But with high gas prices (food hasen't noticably changed here at all) you budget. You don't spend outside your limits and some people may request government assistance to get by on. But, we're one income, one minivan and 3 kids and we get by on just budgeting and sometimes clipping coupons and we don't spend on luxeries or wants.

  3. That's a good question? But the answer is you can not. That's why you have to stay in school and get as much education as possible. The more ed.  you have the higher wages you can demand.

  4. No one...I have a hard time making it on 14....

  5. dumdum is right again, thank you dumdum for telling the truth! I have 2 partime jobs,i live in the country,i'm currently taking care of my elderly father, but if it wasnt for living with him,i'd be on the street.I've never been on welfare or any gov'mnt assistance, never will be either because i hate this gov'mnt and hate this country! Honest, hardworking people DO suffer, and it's just what dumdum said, right to a T!

  6. That's just it they are not making it and your other answerer is wrong about high school kids making $7.50 an hour most don't and a ton of working families do.It now takes 3 paychecks to live and 4 if you want to save and do any extras.Life is scary nowadays.I have grands and I worry about it.

  7. Back then , you needed five gallons of gas to drive ten miles.

    Okay, I'm slightly exaggerating.

The answer is simple. Most people make more than $7.50/ hr.

Most of the ones that DO make $7.50 are high-school kids, who are not worried about the price of heating oil, food, car payments, or rent.

Those positions are not worth more than $7.50. If they were , then it would be impossible to pay someone such a low wage. People just wouldn't show up.

These jobs exist, and are filled, by people who have agreed to the price.  Nobody is forcing anyone to flip burgers. We already have free education here. You can do whatever job you like. It's a free country.

If you are trying to raise a family on $7.50 per hour, you are an idiot without a mailbox. All you need is a mailbox, and the free money will start pouring in from the Welfare Office.

Gasoline was $0.24 in 1964? And now it is $3.89?

Do you even REALIZE what your are saying?

Gasoline has only gone up $3.64 over the last 44 years!

Can you name one other commodity that has gone up less than $3.64 in the last 44 years? One?

OTHER ANSWERERS who's heart is spewing blood over the "poor" people. Guess what. Socialism does not work. If you can make a "livable wage" at any job you take, what would be the sense of people taking harder jobs? The populace would be made up of $30/hr parking attendants and burger flippers. Why would anyone bother to go to college, if every occupation payed a "livable wage"?

Low wages are an incentive to work harder.

Other countries, where burger flippers make the same money as aeronautic engineers...their taxes are 60% of their income.

I'm sorry, but I am not gonna suffer cuz someone else doesn't want to show any effort.

Americans do not know what economic hardship is. Crying cuz they can't go to the movies 4 times a week. Deal with it, and stop expecting the government to pay your bills.
