How to permanently remove a light fixture on the bathroom wall?

I don't have the knowledge/tools to remove the wires completely, and they are on a fuse with other outlets/lgights. I can do basic DIY and I know to turn off the mains before I do anything.

Can I blank off the wires and stuff them back in the wall before patching the hole? Do I need to get some kind of blanking plate/junction box for the wires? What tools/supplies do I need? I am in the UK as that will probably make a difference regarding codes, voltage, etc.

  1. We had to have this done in our lounge and the electrician did exactly as Vinay said.  We now have a blank banking plate on one side of the wall and the wires (covered and made safe) are behind it.

If you can only do basic DIY it might be safer to get someone in to do this for you ....

  2. Disconnect the wires from the terminal strip inside the socket on the wall. Make sure to leave the terminal strip inside as otherwise there is a chance of the wire ends coming in contact with each other and causing a short circuit. Basically upon disconnecting the light fixture, you have to make sure that the now unused wire ends are kept separated from each other and there can be many ways to do that. Sealing the hole is not a good idea. A blanking plate which can be opened up later should be acceptable. A s***w driver should do most of the job.

  3. the only way you can permanently patch the hole is if you pull the wires out.

  4. I don't know UK codes but most areas require you to put a cover that allows the wires to be accessed after disconnecting them and capping. This cover cannot be permanently patched over.
