  1. I had a male cat that ended up, well, doing his business on my clothes when I got back from trips. I'm not saying all male cats will be like that, he was very affectionate. You just can't be too sure. It depends on where the cat was born and how it was raised and what environment. All I can say is, don't buy a cat until you are absolutely in LOVE with it, and make sure your cat knows that it's loved.

(I would go with a female)

  2. Make sure its eyes are clear and bright, its fur isn't oily looking, and its attentive and friendly when you hold it. If the kitten kisses you or purrs while you hold it, it should be quite affectionate. Good luck.

  3. Thinking about getting a kitten? Well, first stop (and hopefully only stop)should be the local animal shelter. From early spring through the start of fall most shelters are brimming with adorable, cuddly kittens of all colors. If you really want a specific breed of cat and can't find one at the shelters, try a breed rescue group.

By adopting a "shelter" or "rescue" animal, you are giving an animal a second chance, and maybe it's last chance. Overcrowding and lack of resources results in many of these cats and kittens being euthanized.

You can also help to keep the pet population in check by adopting a "pre-owned" animal. Before you go to the shelter or call a rescue group, you should have some ideas of what you are looking for in a cat or kitten. Are you willing to groom a longhaired cat as often as required? Are you sure no one in your household is allergic to cats?

  4. Personally I like male cats, they need to be fixed at a young age to avoid spraying in your home.  When I seen my little Owen at 4 wks he walked up to me and demanded attention.  When I picked him up at 6 wks he was such a lover!  He is a wonderful cat!

    Good Luck!

  5. It would be best is your ask to be in one of the cages with the kittens and when the first cute one walks up starts sniffin you that is the cat you pick.

  6. do not take the first kitten you look at/hold. make sure while you are there to spend more than a few seconds with each kitten that catches your eye. you should be able to tell which ones are the affectionate ones within a few minutes of holding/petting them.

    congrats on adopting.

  7. First thing first your doing the right thing by going to the shelter.x*x job.If you ignore the kittens when you go threw 1 will catch your eye and you will know if the cat is affectionate. If they are very active in the cage usually that means they are very sly and prone to getting in trouble.

  8. Kittens in general are very sociable (as are the young of many species).  So right off the bat, if you see a kitten that does not seem to interested in coming to greet you as visitor, you might want to shy away from that one.  All the friendly, sociable kittens will probably come to greet or investigate you when you step into the room or open the cage.  Make sure you take the time to play with and hold each of the friendliest.

Keep in mind that kittens have tons of energy and so they may be squirmy.  But if a kitten is obviously trying to get away from you, that one won't be your cuddle cat.  Your perfect affectionate little buddy will be the one that purrs, or rubs against you insistently to pet him/her, or curls right up in your arms instead of fighting to be put down.

As to gender, my experience has been that females are a little more single-minded.  There are exceptions both ways, but assuming that you are going to get your animal fixed, you can generally expect that:  A)  Females may take a extra time to trust someone new and usually attach strongly to one person.  B)  Fixed males also have strong bonds to their primary caretakers, but are usually much more sociable with other people they meet.  (Personally, I prefer males.  Every male cat I've ever known will greet me when I visit its owner's house.  Females usually won't.  They do attach strongly to their caretaker, though, so you will still get affection.)

TIP:  Make sure you cuddle with the kitten you choose a lot.  Keep it accustomed to being held, handled, petted, stroked, etc and it will grow up continuing to accept it.  Also, go ahead and regularly do things like look inside its ears, open its mouth to look at its teeth and gums, handle its paws and squeeze gently to inspect its claws.  Not only does it help the cat get used to being handled to the extreme, it makes vet visits easier and less stressful, since your cat will be used to getting checked out.  And while you're doing all this, NEVER let your kitten use claws and teeth on your hand or feet.  That's what toys are for.  Say OW! very loudly and convincingly, and then replace your hand with a toy.  Bitey/scratchy behaviors like this are the most likely thing that will spoil an otherwise cuddly kitten.

  9. well what me and my mom do is look for the uglyest cat you can find... i know i know that sound dumb but it makes them cute in there own way not just beacuse they are little. and if you want it to be loveing like my cat was you just have to spened time with it from the moment you get him or her be sweet and they will be sweet back!

  10. I don't really think s*x matters just spend some time with the kittens and which ever one likes you the best or you like the best adopt it! And remember to always neuter and spay your cats. =)
