  1. Best planted in Autumn or Winter.Depending on the variety you choose, your tree comes with root-ball attached. Some acers(Maple) like compost in the hole first.Plant in hole up to the ridge on the trunk.Firm earth around plant.Water.I would check with your garden center before planting.I have a beauty which turns bright purple in Winter.

  2. First, it's important to choose the right spot. I don't think Japanese Maples like too much direct sun or wind, so a sheltered area with filtered sunlight or sun during part of the day would be ideal. Also, keep in mind the final height of the mature tree so you don't plant it too close to a house or another tree/structure.

Dig a hole wider than the root ball, and deep enough to keep the base of the tree at soil level. Be careful not to bury any of the trunk that's not already below the soil. After you fill in with soil around the root ball, water very heavily at first to get any air pockets out of the dirt. New trees need pretty regular watering at first until they mature.

  3. Find a suitable spot, dig hole deep enough and wide enough for root ball, fill with dirt, and water.

  4. plant in a good location of your choice.  dig a hole a little wider than the root ball  fill the hole with water and let the dirt soak up the water. making sure that the root ball is even with the ground around it.

Fill in any spaces with the dirt from the hole, tamp with your foot  and water again.
