Onions should be planted in a sunny or partially shady spot with little wind. Don't plant in heavy clay soils. If you have poor soil you may want to add organic matter before you start sowing the seeds.

    Create a level surface.

Use your feet or the head of the rake to firm down the soil.

Lightly rake the surface once more. Make a shallow row with a stick. You can lay a piece of string on the soil as a guide to make sure you dig planting  rows in a straight line.

Plant seeds 1/2 inch deep in the shallow rows.

Gently cover seeds with soil & gently firm down the soil.

    Water the planted onions seeds.

If you plant early in the spring, you can protect them from frost with gardening fabric.

If you plant sets, they should be planted with the tips pointing upwards at a depth of 1 to 1 1/2 inches. .
