My video recorder has both a DV slot and a memory card slot. The format of the video is AVI and when I load memory card in the computer, there is sound but no picture.

  1. AVI is only a container for encoded audio and video. It's the encoding method that's important. It could be DivX, Xvid, Indeo... and the list goes on.

It seems that your DVR will not support this particular format of .avi file. If you would like to know what type of avi it is, then download this utility....

  2. Get VLC media player.

It will play pretty much any video format there is. It's odd that your camcorder is recording in AVI. But in any case, VLC can most likely play the file.
