But you CAN play standard DVDs on a Blu-ray player (and will upconvert the DVD video to pseudo-HD). In addition many play CDs too. The player should auto sense the format and play. If you are using an unusual or home burned DVD, it may not play .. check the specs for the player, and it will list all the formats it accepts (e.g. DVD-R, DVD+RW).
