as mentioned previously you need a 'bank'

you need to understand the form guides and what everything in them means.

ideally you need a system in which helps you pick your selections, everyone that punts has a system.

you need to watch races that you arent punting in, because it will help you do the form.  there is only so much info you can get from a form-guide and by watching the replys etc you can get a true indication of what the form-guides mean when it says a horse got 'checked'  some horses get 'checked' and lose complete momentum while others get 'checked' and it doesnt really affect them.

Personally i dont punt that much on the horses, i concentrate on the greyhounds and thats where my money is!!

the horses are harder because you have to think to yourself whether you can trust the jockeys, trainers to let the horse race truly.

I think the best way to make money at horse racing is this:  fully how to read the betting sheets that go with the race.  Understand all the principles on the accepted strategy of picking winners.   Become a student of the jockey, breeder, trainer triangle, learn the top names.

Now all this being said I fell that you can only make money by betting the favorite to show and proving (pre-bet) that that horse is indeed the favorite to win.   That is the safest bet.  The winnings will be small and the only deviation in the bet should be increasing or decreasing the amount bet by the number of competing horses in the race that are worthy of a chance to win.

trifecta, exacta and long shots are where the money is but you will give your winnings back over time.

www.tvg.com has a good learning page......Of course the idea is for you to lose money to them later.   They have a bet simulator also.   I have been working out my system and doing well, it just  isn't very exciting and I'm haven't quite my day job.

I have been betting on horse racing for many yrs and up until recently I lost a lot of money. about 2 mopnths ago around kentucky derby time I tried a new wagering style, i began playing pick 3's instead of betting on single horses.

although the odds are higher on pick 3's i found it very much easier to make some good money on. with the pick 3's you can bet on more than one horse in a race and take chances to earn some value. over the past month i've prob made about $500 from only two trips out to the track, most recent of which i placed a $12 pick 3 wager and won $238.70.

i hope this helps because ever since i started using this type of bet my winnings have increased greatly.
