How to play an electric guitar?

I got an electric guitar for my birthday, but i have no idea how to play it, i can play some song, but only on one string and i want to be able to play like a rockstar and or professional, so do you have any sites, suggestions, or really easy lessons that would help me learn how to play my guitar?

By a good book with tabs, music, chord and lyrics. You should choose a musician you really like and has good guitar in it. You can by music books at any guitar or music store. You could also get some lessons. Get some tabs of the net if you'd like. Have fun.

I play guitar and my biggest piece of advice, is u need lessons if u want to play professionally. Often playing gutiar without an instructor will lead to some bad habits, etc.

Things you will need to learn include chords, power chords, string names, string notes, read music and tabs, etc.

is a great tab site, and if u can read a chord diagram, it has the chords for some songs.

about.com also usually has tips and ideas for everything. lol

Before I learnt to play guitar, I remember self teaching. It is NOTHING compared to lessons.

Well.. If you can get lessons that would help a bunch. If you cant then I would suggest looking up videos on youtube that show beginners how to get started. If you want you can buy some begginer books at a local music store. I have been playing for like 3 and a half years, and still do not know how to read music. But its always just as easy to read tab. for that rock sound, learn the power chord. it is a short chord that is used very heavily with the electric guitar. learn some styles as well. Learn how to read tab it is very easy and when you learn how to read you'll be ableo go to ultimate-guitar.com and learn some songs you'd never dream of playing. start out with songs such as smells like teen spirit, bulls on parade, iron man, dont fear the reaper, crazy train and other songs people deem as easy. or e-mail me and I could get my video camera and give you lessons.
