In a nutshell you set up your board with the little round pieces called pips.  Then you roll the dice and move the pips around the board to your side and then off into the tray accordingly.  If you roll a two and a four, you can move one pip six spaces OR one pip two spaces and another pip four spaces.  You try to get your pieces off of the board before your opponent.  It gets a little more complicated when you have only one pip on a space....your opponent can "hit" you and put your piece up on the bar (the middle)  then yo have to roll an exact number to get back out on your opponents side.  For this you will need to look for a website with more info.  The one provided in the first answer is good.  Below is another that teaches you as you play.

I think the best way to learn is by doing....so you should look for an on-line or down-loadable game that you can play against a computer.  That way you can practice the simple game while picking up some strategy as well.  When you are ready for more of a challenge, there are several on-line gaming communities where you can play against other people at their computers.  Backgammon is fun...good luck learning!
