How to polish the shofar-remove the rough black covering?

I've never done that but, if I were to do it I think I would use a buffing wheel with some buffing compound being careful to not put too much pressure or leave it on too long to where it gets too hot. wouldn't want a crack in it.

When done, I would put a thin coat of polyurethane on it to protect it. I am wondering though, is this a horn that you cut off yourself or did you buy it somewhere? I don't understand you buying it in this condition, that is why I ask.
