Hi, my son is 2yrs and 3mons and is ready to potty train. He has been taking off his diaper, this morning he went pee pee on the bathroom floor near the toilet then flushed the toilet.lol He insists on wearing "big boy" underwear... I let him wear them and have been trying to put him on the potty every couple hours.......he has not gone in the potty yet. I am just curious what tips you can give me or if you can share your story on the best way to potty train. I am giving alot of praise when he does sit on potty...... any other tips would be greatly appreciated. Please be nice:)

  1. cheerio target practice... get the attachable urinal thing for little boys who can't really get there pee stream up to toilet bowl level... if u think while he is sitting on the potty that he needs to pee... run the water in the sink... it will make him go...

  2. I brought my son (2 1/2) to the toilet every hr or so & do the "shhhh" sound with him. It's hard work but he will know that's the place to go if he needed to. With Poo, thank goodness he has hard stool so when he squad down doing the "eh" sound, i will quickly bring him to the toilet. He got used to all that after a while

  3. When I trained my son(30)years ago I used Cheerios.I would put them in the toilet and tell him to sink them.He loved it.I think It was just a few days to get him trained during the day.I also kept a cheap gum ball machine with M&Ms in it for him going potty.Don't forget the praise after he goes.

My son is using a urinal and tiny pieces of toilet paper to potty train his son.So far so good he said.

    Good Luck

  4. I tried the whole M&M thing with my child, it made her hyperactive. We use stickers now and I give her lots of praise. I found that it was hard to get her to stay seated and wait, we bought a different potty with a more comfortable seat which worked tremendously.

  5. My son is 2. I have found that giving him an incentive to go potty in the toilet works. I used m&m's the first week then went to stickers. I created a sticker chart and for every 20 stickers he would get a new toy car. He got to pick it out. I went to walmart bought 8 different cars the 97cent hot wheel ones... and he loves it. Every 20 stickers he got a new car. Then when the chart was full he was completely potty trained (except night) that is what i am working on now. Make a BIG deal over it. I also bought the Peter Potty Urinal and my son uses it more than the actual toilet. Boys pee easier standing up. I wish you luck... oh yea you might want to mount the urinal to the wall if you choose to buy it, ($20 walmart) well worth the money, if ur son is a boy he will carry it and put it where ever. Then the pee gets everywhere. It is a great potty and I am very glad I bought it. Remember to dump it every night before bed or 2 times a day or the stink is horrible! Good luck!

  6. Have trained a girl ,not boy, but what worked for me was to give one M&M with pee in the potty.  Two M&M's with p**p.  She trained fast.  Some have said to throw a couple of Cheerios in the potty for the boys to aim at.  Sounds like a fun game.  Maybe it'll work for you. :-)

  7. Maybe you can tell him that if he doesn't pee in the toilet that you'll make him wear his diapers then hide all his underwear.

  8. There are stories about using the pot. Call library.

Observe your child when he usually goes, such as after meals.

    Praise and rewards are good.

It is good for dad to show him (as example )

  9. I just started training my son about a month ago - and came here for tips too! :)  My son is almosts 3.  What I've been doing is; put the potty close by for quick access.  First it was in the bathroom for half a year and whenever we would use the bathroom, he would come with us and sit on his potty & read books.  Now he really likes to sit on the "big toilet" so we have a seat on that & he won't even use the potty.  We also found Lightening McQueen static stickers & put them on the toilet - soooo cool!

I've taken my son "potty treat" shopping & he's picked M&M's, Nibs, and recently Skittles & Swedesh Berries.  Recently, I've put them in jars on the counter so he can see them & knows the only way to get them is on the potty.  One for "trying" & sitting, and one for peeing, and LOTS of he goes p**p (which he hasn't yet).

To start off, I would take him every hour to go pee, and if he didn't pee, every 10 minutes.  I had ALOT of accidents the first day, but I noticed it started teaching him to hold it longer & he would stay dry longer.  Then he just started doing a pee dance so I would run him up there!  Then he started telling me he had to pee!  I would also tell him "no pee on the floor, no pee in your undies" but not make a big deal about it if it happened.

Anyway, I've been busy and haven't been as "focused", so it's relapsed a bit, so I have to go back to making regular bathroom breaks "let's just try", but he's gotten the concept of holding and releasing his bladder.  No success in the bowel movements - for a while he was getting upset because I told him no p**p in your undies & diaper, and so he would start crying "oh no mom, p**p's coming out!"  but will Not go on the potty!  So I told him it's okay in your diaper and toilet, but not the floor or undies, because I didn't want him to become constipated.

So!  Hope you get some tips!  The first day was Messy - but once I put him on every hour (I was doing every 2 hours, and every 1/2 hour after that), we had alot more success the next day.

    Goodluck!

Oh!  Also, I let my son be naked the first 2-3 days, and also bought him special potty books & cars (Spiderman ones, etc.) thathe could only play with on the toilet - Great incentive to stay on the toilet for a few minutes!

  10. We are just starting with the potty training, but here are some tricks from friends

    1. Give him an M&M for sitting on te potty and trying and 3 for actually going in the potty.

    2. Create your own potty song that he'll get excited about.  Clap and dance to the song every time he goes.

    3. Let him walk around naked for a few days (this only works if you're not going anywhere lol).  If he starts to go then run to the potty with him.

    4. Sit his potty next to yours and whenever you go tell him he should try to go.

    Good Luck!:)

  11. Potty training my daughter was an experience. At 18 months we got her a potty chair and she would use it occasionally. I tried everything. We did a sticker chart and once she filled up a line she would get to pick out a toy at the store. That helped a bit, but the main thing is a child will do it when they're really ready. Give lots of encouragement and positive reinforcement. Try to figure out a good schedule and see when they go during the day. You're doing the right thing by putting him on the toilet and having him try. One big thing that helps is don't give any drinks after 7 or so and make it a habit to go to the bathroom right before bed. My daughter will not go to sleep without going potty and brushing her teeth. Children love habits.

Just have some patience and know it will happen. I thought it never would, lol, but she finally did it right around 5 months ago.
