Question:

How to power a computer with salvaged parts?

I have two desktop computers. Each has a functional hard drive, processor, video card, cd-rom drive etc. One has a more powerful processor, 2.4 GHz (dell dimension 4550) vs. 1.1 GHz (dell dimension 2100). Is there any way I can use that additional power from the 2100 machine to power my other, dimension 4550 computer? I feel that it is kind of a waste to have these two machines because the 4550, although faster, has virus-ridden hard-drives and is not practical to use. I am looking to add a "fast" computer to my arsenal and am wondering if I can somehow harness the power from the 2100 computer and use it to power my 4550 computer.

  1. No , its just not practical. Even the ram from the older pc wont work in the new one. You can always reformat 2100 and sell it on ebay :)

  2. You could get a soldering gun and "fuse" the two motherboards.

On a realistic note...simply delete the partitions on the drives with the virus and reuse. Otherwise, if you feel strongly about using them, remove them and toss them...then use the drives from the other PC. Reinstall windows and go.

  3. Hi Rob

If you are having   virus and other problems with your hard drive why not just put things right in that area.

II do not know what make your hard drive is if it is either a maxtor or seagate download Maxblast 4 and run it  you can  check your drive format it , partition it and even select the os to install on it. If its another make go to the manufacturers web site and download their  diagnostic software.

Or simply fdisk and reformat your hard drive and reinstall your os system and programs.    otherwise  use a different hard drive in the computer
