Question:

How to pray Taraweeh?

Salam!

I have a question regarding how to perform the prayers of taraweeh! I can't consistently go to the Masjid and pray taraweeh due to school work and etc. But thankfully (especially to the hadith which states that it is better for women to pray at home) I could pray within the walls of my house.

Now, one problem.

How do I pray it? Do I pray it as any other salah, but have the intention of Taraweeh? And I don't know much Surahs.. Is it okay to repeat all the small surahs all over? And would they have to be said in the order of the qur'an?

Thanks :)

  1. Taraweeh (Night Prayer) is generally 2 to 3 times longer than the daily prayers.

Taraweeh comes from "tarweeha" which means "you rest".

The number is not standardized as far as I know, but the process is that you recite 2 or 4 rakats then pause.  You read something or relax for a minute, you don't stand up right away.

The Taraweeh, when prayed two rakats at a time, is exactly like the two rakats of the Fajr Prayer.

There is a lot of linked information here, including to places where you can here them live:

  2. this is how we pray in bangladesh,as we hardly have any mosques where women can pray.

we begin with niyyat saying"nawaituan usallillahi taa'la rakaa'tein salatil tarawih. Sunnat rasulallahi taa'la mutawajjehan ila jahatil kaa'batish sharifaati, Allahu Akbar

then we recite surat al fatihah and then surat all fil, we go to sijda and then stand up again and again read surat al fatihah followed by surat al quraish.

then we again do sijdah and sit  then read attahiyatu lillaahe.....we read the whole thing then say salaam and then read this dua,

"haaza min fadle Rabbi ya kareemal maa'rufe, ya kadeemal ihsaane ahsen ilaina bi ihsaanikal kadeeme sabbat kulubena a'la deenika berahmatika ya arhamar raahemen."

then we stand up and again make niyyat( nawaituan usallillahe....as above)

you repeat the same way, but this time we recite surat al maun after surat al fatehah in the first rakat and surat al kawthar in the second rakat also after fatihah

then we sit to read attahiyatu, do the salam and then read this dua, you can read it(dua) once or 3 times as you wish

"subhana dhil mulki wal malakooti, subhana dhil i'zzate wal azmaate wal heibaate wal kudraate wal kibria-i  wal jabarooti, subhaanal malikil haiyyal ladhi la yanaamo wa la yamooto abadan abada, subbuhun kuddusun rabbuna wa rabbul malaa-ikati warroohi"

After this we do munajat by holding our hands in a cupped shape in the air infront of our face, and say this

"Allahumma innanasalukal jannata wa naa'udhubika min annare ya khalikal jannate wannare , birahmatika ya a'zeezu ya ghaffaru, ya kareemu ya sattaaru, ya raheemu ya jabbaaru, ya khaliku ya barru . Allahumma ajerna min annaare ya mujeeru ya mujeeru ya mujeeru, birahmatika ya arhaam arrahimeen. "

like this pray either 8 rakhas or 20 rakhas. You can reapeat the surahs if you dont know many, yet it is better if you try to learn more of the small surahs. After all it is the holy month of Ramadan.....

       Take care.
