  1. First off get right to your base speed at the start and hold it for as long as you can.  When it starts hurting with around 1000 meters left just push through.  Then sprint with around 300 or 400 meters left.  Even if it feels like you're going to literally die(trust me I know the feeling) just keep looking at the number go down.  Personally with 100m left I just go crazy and give everything I have.  100 meters goes by like that.

  2. when i have a 2k test, i focus on strokes per minute to keep my time down.

for the first 500m, i stay around the mid to high 30s spm (this is basically a sprint to warm up my muscles and start off with a good baseline time).

for the middle 1000m, i stay around 28-32. this is reasonably fast but not sprinting. it should be a speed that is easy for you to hold. just find a speed and settle into it so you're pushing but not overexerting yourself.

then on the last 500m just absolutely go all out. high 30s. try to make each pull around 10+ meters so you can effectively count down from 200m with 20 pulls left. knowing that you have only 20 strokes to go always gives me one last adrenaline rush for the final push.

good luck on your time test!
