How to prepare body for surfing?

I want to take up surfing. What can I do to prepare my body so I have the most success on my first try out in the water? I made a balance board and have started practicing on that. Is there anything else I can do? strength training? is there such thing as surf simulators?

  1. endurance work on the shoulders so lots of swimming which will help all round huh?

  2. go to surfin skool

  3. UPPER BODY TRAINING

    push ups

    pull ups

draw a surfboard with chalk and practice standing up

  4. It takes an enormous amount  of upper body strength so I would suggest pull ups and push ups.

Then you really need a strong core for your center of balance. so I would say sit ups and crunches and possibly leg lifts.

also if you can get a board early try to find a sound or river and paddle. it sucks big time but it'll help your strength.

and make sure you are ok with being in the water and you're comfortable with your swimming abilities.

and you can try to practice your pop ups because thats the hardest part of surfing when you're starting out

oh and if you can try to get some locals to critique you when you're out there. most of the time they'll be happy to help and tell you what you're doing wrong. I met some great locals  my first time out and they go me standing up in no time!

  5. MOst definatly upper body trainiing that is the best

  6. In my surfing experience, which is limited - I learned to surf last year, and will be taking some lessons this summer - the biggest piece of advice that would have helped me was to prep my shoulders.  The stronger my shoulders and arms are, the better the paddling goes.

I did not realize how much upper body strength was needed - for me, the balance was easy, and not as key as the upper body stuff.  For me to get ready for my lessons this summer, I will be swimming laps 3-5 times weekly, and working on upper body and arm strength.

Another piece of advice that I did not get, but is useful is to make sure to either wear a rash guard or a wetsuit.  That will help avoid upper arm and belly burn from the board.

Surfing is a blast, have fun with it!
