I'll enter the O.R. soon as a medical student for the first time.

I want to know how to prepare myself to the O.R. and what r precautions I should take care of?

  1. What the Pangolin said. Everyone else is doing something useful, your job is to stay out of their way.

If everyone suddenly shuts up ... you should leave. Something unexpected just happened and you are surplus.

It's a good idea to read about the surgery that is going on so you will know what to expect.  (I walked into an OR to take a note from one doc to another and almost passed out ... no one told me that a face lift would look so gross!)

Some of the staff will be very happy to chat, others won't.

  2. Don't get in the way.

Watch what you touch, and don't touch anything unless you're told to.

Respect the nurses and scrub techs.

If you think you might pass out, move to the edge of the room and sit down.

No jewelry, no fake fingernails if you're going to scrub in.

Ask the residents ahead of time what is expected of you, and then follow their recommendations

Read up on the procedure ahead of time, and know the anatomy of the area at the very least.
