How to prevent/get rid of piling?

Does anyone know how to prevent piling (the little balls you get on fabric) on tops, etc? I hate it, especially on my hoodies and I'd like to know how to prevent it or get rid of it.

If it is already there, get an inexpensive clothes shaver, made just for pilling.

Next time, invest in mesh laundry bags to put your favorite tops and lingerie in.  Not together, separately.

Also use the gentle setting on the washer, or do this type of laundry by hand.
