Every time I start up the computer, internet explorer automatically opens with a landing page. How do I prevent this. I do not need internet explorer to open upon start-up and I don't want the landing page to some spy ware company. Thank you

  1. If something configured your system to launch Explorer and bring up a spyware advertisement, the odds are that you are already infected with something.

First make sure that your IE home page hasn't been changed.  (Tools / Internet options / home page.)  If it has, change it back to what you want.

Next, open msconfig (start/run/msconfig) and check the "startup" tab for anything that's "obviously wrong" and disable it.  Note that there are plenty of strange looking things that belong there, so you need to be careful.

Save and reboot.  If you still get the spyware page displaying on startup, either you missed the startup entry for it, or you've got some sort of infection and the system needs to be cleaned.  Note that most places you find will "clean" the system by simply wiping the drive and reinstalling Windows, so you'll need to back up any data you want to save, or find someone who knows how to properly clean an infected system.

  2. Open start menu, click on "run", type in "msconfig", click okay, click the startup tab. This should list everything that runs on startup. Find what you're looking for and de-select it, click okay. Just be careful not to disable any system functions.
