  1. Access the interface of your wireless router and enabled your security key.

  2. enable WEP or WPA encryption and MAC filtering on your router.  need assistance to set it up let me know

  3. All WiFi hubs/routers/etc have the ability to turn on encryption.  There are multiple forms, such as WEP and WPA.  Once turned on, a computer can connect to the wireless network only if it knows the "key" that you assign.

Typically, you access the WiFi hub/router/etc administrative console by opening "http://192.168.1.1" in your browser and entering the username/password for the system.  Your WiFi's manual will tell you the default username/password as it comes from the factory.  The first thing you should do is change the password!  (Otherwise, anyone can access it.  I have several neighbors who never enabled encryption, nor changed the password.  I can access their admin control panel from my laptop in my house.  Lucky for them, I have scruples.)  Then, find the WiFi security settings and enable encryption.  Pick the highest level of protection that is supported by both the router/hub/etc and your computers.

For further protection, you can disable "SSID broadcast" and change your SSID.  The SSID is the "service set identifier" and is what is used to distinguish your wireless network from your neighbors'.  Again, the specifics vary by manufacturer and model, and can be found in your manual.

For even further protection, you could enable "MAC address filtering".  Every network card has a unique "MAC address".  (This is not the same as an IP address.)  On a Windows system, open a command prompt (start/run/cmd) and type "ipconfig /all".  Look for your wireless adapter, and the MAC address will be listed as "physical address".  You can tell your WiFi hub/router/etc to only allow connections from a specific list of MAC addresses.  The downside to this would be it would also prevent a friend/relative/visitor from using your WiFi connection without you explicitly adding it to the list.
