How to prevent ozone layer depletion?

  1. It's a solved problem.  The depletion of the ozone was caused by the release of chemicals called CFC-s--which was banned years ago.

There's still ozone depletion because it takes decades for the CFCs already in the admosphere to break down.  For that, there's noting to do but wait.

BTW--ozon depletion is an entirely different phenomenon from global warming.

  2. We have to ban CFCs.  I'm sorry we already did that.  Then why did the  whole in the ozone layer turn up bigger than ever last year over the Antarctic?  These same people that say we had to  ban CFCs say we have to ban co2.

  3. The ozone layer can be depleted by free radical catalysts, including nitric oxide (NO), hydroxyl (OH), atomic chlorine (Cl), and atomic bromine (Br). While there are natural sources for all of these species, the concentrations of chlorine and bromine have increased markedly in recent years due to the release of large quantities of manmade organohalogen compounds, especially chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and bromofluorocarbons.

These highly stable compounds are capable of surviving the rise to the stratosphere, where Cl and Br radicals are liberated by the action of ultraviolet light. Ozone levels, over the northern hemisphere, have been dropping by 4% per decade.

Although we have banned CFC but even than the problem is not over as yet and we need to take immediate steps for saving ozone since it controls UV rays and these rays cause skin problems and cancer.
