The best way is to close all the holes where rats have chances to penetrate and come over.  Close all your bathroom doors and if your window is close by some pipes, close those windows during night.

If already you are battling with rats inside your house, best is to keep a trap, with some food item in it.  For sure, you will succeed in trapping this.  After which exercise the above caution!

To prevent them from entering house is to close all the holes. Use wood instead of paper or plastic or cloth.

If there are already rats in your house, use rat kill. mix it with wheat flour and put it in multiple places. Make sure there is no water left open. i.e. containers with water without lids.

When the rats eat the rat kill. They first go unconscious. If they get to water, they can survive. So, if you don't keep water within their reach, by morning they will die. This worked for us when we were in India. The rat trap did not work because, rats were so fat or I don't know how they managed, they would take out the food but the trap would still be open without any rats in it.
