  1. get a bucket, put some water in ,I would say the amount you need, then roll a lime till soft, cut it and squeeze it in the water, stir and add the clothing to the water...in trinidad we put it into lime water to keep the color in,after dyeing, and after a couple times wearing if it is looking dull we put it in lime water, this stops it from washing out..try this and see what happens,,good luck..

  2. Wash it in cold water using woolite or simular product.

  3. I try to make sure that I wash only in cold water.  They also sell laundry detergent that is made especially to help stop the fading of colors in your clothes so you may want to check that out.

  4. Rit dye is a hot water dye which works best when immersed in boiling dye for half an hour. Did you apply it in hot water or cold water? If you used cold water, do not rinse it until you have heat-set it.

You cannot heat-set Rit dye with dry heat, such as an iron or a clothes dryer. Along with the heat, moisture is required to encourage the dye to associate most strongly with the fiber in the fabric. For multi-color tie-dye, you can dip one section of the shirt into boiling dye water at a time, and hold it there for 4 minutes for pale pastel colors or 30 minutes for bright or dark colors, for each color. Or, you can apply the dye in cool water, then wrap the shirt, still extremely wet with dye, in plastic wrap, such as Saran Wrap, then put it in a vegetable steamer, cover it, and steam it over boiling water for at least half an hour. If the shirt has already dried, spray it with water before wrapping it and steaming.

Even after heat-setting, Rit dye tends to bleed badly in the laundry, ruining other clothing, and it fades quickly, unless you treat it by soaking it in hot water with a cationic dye fixative. The most well-known brand of cationic dye fixative is Retayne, which can be purchased from quilting supply shops (usually only by mail-order). The company that makes Rit dye has recently begun marketing their own brand of the same sort of product as Retayne; they call it Rit Dye Fixative. If you can find this product, buy it and use it! Rit dye cannot be set on cotton with salt, vinegar, or any other home remedy. Only the commercial dye fixative will work.

Next time you tie-dye, don't use Rit. It's a crummy dye, it's a lot of trouble to use, and it produces poor results. Next time use a decent dye, such as the dye found in good tie-dye kits. You will have to go to a crafts store or possibly Walmart to find a good tie-dye kit. You can't buy decent dye in the grocery store. Avoid the Rit tie-dye kit and the Magic Strings tie-dye kit, because they do not work well. Excellent brands of tie-dye kits include Jacquard, Tulip, Rainbow Rock, and Dritz. They are set with washing soda instead of with heat, and they form such permanent bonds to the fiber that you can wash them in hot water and not see any fading for years. In contrast, Rit dye forms only temporary bonds, must be washed only in cold water, and fades quickly.
