Question:

How to professionally groom my American Miniature horse?

Alright so my little yearling looks great right now but I would like him to look his best for Saturday. He's going up to Tractor Supply for a couple hours to showcase the AMH breed along with his Rocky Mountain friend for the Rocky Mountain breed. It's to show the general public and locals some breeds of horses. Now I'm lookig for a way to groom him to his very best and I'm including a picture of his stte back in April. He isn't as hairy along his legs and he is completely black on his dark spots and his legs are completely straight and not knobby anymore. Please if anyone has anything they can share I'd love something. By the way, I've never shown a horse so telling me it's just like it will be a bit useless. Thank you.

  1. Buy some whitening shampoo from your local feed/tack store to really get his white bright (especially on his lower legs.  You will need to trim his muzzle, ears, long hairs above/below his eyes, and all the hair from his fetlocks.  Spray some showsheen in his mane, and really get it to lay flat.  You might want to band it and leave it until saturday, then pull the bands out (it will pull out some hair to thin it, but also make it lay flat).  Then trim a bridle path from between his ears, back a few inches.  Buy some face shiney (like Silverado, etc) or you can use baby oil....and wipe it on his muzzle and around his eyes to make them "pop" out more.  Here is an ad I found online with some "show groomed" mini's:

Maybe go to the breeder's website listed on the ad, and check out the grooming on some of the other ones.  Good luck and have fun....and remember, most of the people watching won't have a clue what a mini is supposed to be groomed like either!

  2. i have no clue

  3. Use a set of clippers and clip a bridal path from the center between his ears down to where his ears end if you lay then down on his neck.  Do not trim his mane, pull it even maybe, but don't cut it, and leave a full tail, don't trim it either...the best thing is to bathe him, get all the soap/.shampoo out and use Showsheen after you get the extra water out of his hair...I would rather see a horse with a little extra hair than body clipped...no need to.  If you are a novice at horse grooming, body clipping is not a task you need to embark on.  Get a halter that fits (doesn't necessarily have to be a show halter) and an appropriate lead...make sure his hooves are trimmed and you could use Absorbine supershine either black or clear on his hooves...really adds a polished look to them...that's all that you need.  Enjoy yourself.

  4. trim his mane and tail,

    and full-body clip him,.

that's what most of the people who show minis do.

  5. You need to find out what the AMH breed standard is and groom him according to it.  I imagine that you'd at least want to bathe and clip him, and perhaps polish his hooves and get some Show Sheen on him.  A nice halter and lead (meant for showing, or at least new and clean) would be good, too.

Breed standard is probably here at the AMH website:
