I'm not going to add to what others have tried to explain, other than to say that once you have familiarized yourself with the sounds of French, you will almost always be able to know how a word is pronounced from its spelling. The other way won't hold true, though -- it's harder to spell a word you hear.

La Bedaine = potbelly - it is pronounced like badane

Le Crins - horse hair - it is pronounced like creen
