Polished Saltillo Tile floors, what is the correct way to clean them and give them shine? I have 2 Toddlers so something semi-natural and not to harsh would be nice. NO VINEGAR please.. I can't stand the smell of vinegar!

  1. ive washed my sisters floors(all saltillo)..with any floor cleaner(diluted).1st ..then when dry i use and prefer Mop and Glow.(or something water based).on it takes about 15 mins. to dry?..then another coat...maybe another...doesnt build up...i do hers about every 6 months..floors look fantastic!...even realtors made comments...good luck!

  2. You're in luck!  Vinegar is not the best way to clean your tile.  Bleach and ammonia-based products on one end of the ph scale or the dreaded vinegar on the other end could actually damage it.

I assume it's sealed since you mentioned it had a shine (versus that white coloring that usually shows for unsealed Saltillo.)

Only use a ph neutral cleaner (some will call it a 'true 7') diluted with water, per instructions, on your clay tiles. There are tons of options out there and most neutral cleaners are by definition less harsh.  I like the Mrs. Meyer's stuff myself, but chose what's right for you.

If the shine isn't what you remember, maybe think about resealing/refinishing it, which should be done periodically anyhow.

They are nice looking tiles by the way!!
