Question:

How to properly display an American Flag (vertically)?

The stars belong in the upper left corner (to the viewer), however all too often people simply rotate it from horizontal to vertical without also turning it around. This results with the stars in the upper right corner... ugh! Makes me cringe!

However... Is there any reason I may be unaware of for displaying the flag vertically with the stars on the right? For example, during time of war or perhaps some other reason?

I don't want to chastise someone for improperly displaying a flag if I'm unaware of some lesser-known protocol. Thx!

  1. No, they just don't know any better.

The Presidential seal changes in a time of war (or at least used to), not the flag.

  2. From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Stat...

'When the flag is displayed over a street, it should be hung vertically, with the union to the north or east. If the street runs north-south, the stars should face east. For streets running east-west, the stars should face north. If the flag is suspended over a sidewalk, the flag's union should be farthest from the building and the stars facing away from it. '
