How to properly use the car alarm?

I know this is really stupid, but is the first time I have a car with alarm and still do not understand how to use it. I look it with the remote and leave when i come back to the car I also unlock with the remote, but them it goes on and lock the ignition. Can someone explain me how to use it.

Lots of alarms have a timer on them that will re-arm the alarm if the car hasn't been started.  Some alarms are set to re-lock the doors on this same timer.  If you know you're about to start your car but it's been a little while since you first unlocked it--you know, you were putting something in the trunk, buckling up the child seat etc--just hit the unlock button again right before you start it.
