firstly after you install your OS, install your Antivirus, like AVG, Norton, McAfee, or else. Update your Antivirus, then Install another program you need. (this can prevent an infected software infecting your system when you install that software).

turn on your firewall, (if using vista, turn on your firewall and windows defender) don't forget to update your windows defender.

if you open CD/DVD, USB like flashdisk, or another portable storage, don't open any files which you don't know what is that.
