Question:

How to prove legal ownership of car??

My husband bought a car for me (paid for on his credit card) but he has given the car to me, I am the registered keeper (on the V5) and I have the insurance policy for it under my name. I know that some insurance companies say that to insure you, you must be the legal owner and registered keeper of the car. On the V5 it only states the registered keeper so how do would I prove that I am now the legal owner of the car?? How would an insurance company prove who was the legal owner? What if you had lost the receipt you got when you bought the car? I don't really understand how it works...??

  1. If you're the registered keeper, you're the legal owner!

  2. As Barry B and Mike S have said, there can a difference between the legal owner of a car and its registered keeper - vide all those cars on hp which are legally owned by the finance company but registered in the keepers' names.

All the insurance company want to know is the details of the registered keeper and the user if they are not the same. The insurance is calculated on the user as the risk. They are not interested in the legal ownership.

  3. as far as anyone is conserned.... the legal owner is the name on the Log book.... simple as that...

whoever is on the log book is the only person who can sell the car legaly, therefore the car is yours

  4. when you purchase a vehicle, you get one half of the paperwork and the seller keeps the other half. you both have to inform the DVLA of the change in ownership. The DVLA will then change the registered keeper on the logbook and their records to your name and you are the legal owner.

  5. The registered keeper is not necessarily the legal owner. The registration document states this. Your husband needs to put it in writing and date and sign that he has made a gift of the car to you.

Insurer's have differing requirements but usually need to know not only the reg. keeper but who the owner is.

  6. if you are the registered keeper then you are the legal owner its as simple as that

  7. The insurance company will insure you and the car you give them the details of. The V5 showing the registered keeper does not prove ownership of the car. For example, a car could be on finance and the finance company own the car until you've paid for it but you would have the V5 in your name.Ownership is proved by a bill of sale where the previous owner sells the car to another person so to put your mind at ease I would explain the situation to your insurance broker / company so they know the situation and can advise you accordingly.

  8. The registered keeper is the mug who gets the speeding tickets &c. and who is responsible for the car on a day to day basis. The owner is the person who paid for it and whose name appears on the sale documents unless he has formally given it to you. He could simply write and sign a short note transferring ownership to you

  9. it makes no odds who paid for the car if your name is on the log book as the registered keeper then you r liable and the owner of the car that is the legal document which proves it. had the form been printed or is it hand written? if it is printed it is better, as hand written ones they can say have been altered. im asuming your husband wants the car back? if so this will not be possible if all the legal documentation is in your name.

  10. Every car has a certificate which basically states the owner, vehicle details etc "I think its the v5" and that certificate is what you would need to give to the insurance company to validate ownership.

I dont drive nor ever had a car so not 100% sure about this but sure its the big green sheet that comes with the cars logbook.
