How to prove time test to deduct moving expenses?

The form 3903 does not ask for any proof for the time test. Do I need to include something? Also, how does the IRS verify this/how is it enforced? I'd like to make sure I have all the documents ready.

  1. You do not need to include anything for the time test.  You do not even have to have met it prior to filing your taxes, you just need to expect to meet it.  You need to work 39 weeks out of the 12 months after your move.

The IRS verifies this mainly through audits.  They randomly select people and ask to see the support.  They could also check this based on your W-2 and the tax withholding done ou.  Your pay stubs would be a good way to show you have worked for 39 weeks if you were audited.

  2. Read this about Moving expenses,

  3. No proof is required with your return.

Only in the event of an audit will you have to show proof of any and all deductions.
